1968 : Little gold V monograms-on clothes, shoes, belts-are a hit. March: Lord & Taylor unveils its line-for-line copies of styles from Valentino's spring collection. The venture proves so successful that copies are soon sold at New York competitors Orbach's and Alexander's, as well. June: A Valentino store opens in Paris on the Avenue Montaigne. October: Jacqueline Kennedy selects a long-sleeved, lace-and-pleated-georgette look from Valentino's landmark all-white spring collection for her marriage to Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis. Photos of the new bride appear on magazine covers around the world, sparking a flurry of orders.
